Title
The Final Demon Part B: Wikimedia Commons
- Plot
- Bharata and Shatrughna are deeply saddened by king Dasharatha's death and Barata vows to never take the throne. They quickly bury king Dasharatha and Bharata goes to the jungle to convince Rama to return.
- This part is important because now King Dasharatha is no longer part of the plot he is referenced later, but his main part in the story is over
- Kaikeyi shows no remorse for the fact that she exiled Rama which is still strange to me
- Bharata is unable to convince Rama to return and tries to give him golden sandles for his feet when he refuses. Rama instead tells him to put them on the throne when he returns
- The Golden Sandles are very symbolic of the story and it is very noble of Rama to refuse
- Sita tells the Sage Anasuya about her life from the beginning when they meet in the jungle
- Not a very important part, but still a very interesting part about Sita
- Rama and Lakshmana battle a demon named Viradha who abduct Sita by breaking the demons arms and then set the soul free to go to heaven
- This is just the beginning of the battles with demons, but it is still interesting seeing how they broke his arms
- Rama meets another sage who offers him weapons and a place to stay. Rama refuses the housing, but takes the weapons
- This is another example of Rama being very noble in his cause to stay in complete exile
- Rama meets another demon named Shurpanakha. Shurpanakha tries to seduce Rama, and when it fails, she attacks the group. Her nose and ears are cut of by Lakshmana
- The most interesting part about this section of the story is the fact that it sets up the scene for the rest of this section of reading
- Rama battled a demon army with his celestial weapons, and won
- Shurpanakha goes back to her brother Ravana to tell him about Rama. Ravana then begins setting up a massive attacks against Rama in an effort to destroy him. Maricha, a rakshasa, fights with Ravana to dissuade him but eventually agrees to fight Rama
- Maricha does not do this because he wants to, but does it because he is afraid that Ravana will kill him if he doesn't
- Maricha assumes the form of a golden deer, and tries to woo Sita into leaving the group. Sita asks Rama to bring her the deer. Rama shoots the deer and realizes that it is actually a Rakshasa Maricha. As Maricha is dying, he mimics Rama's voice to try and draw sita out.
- This is unsuccessful at first, but it alarms Sita successfully
- This allows Ravana to try to convince her to leave.
- Ravana now assumes the form of a forest sage, and captures Sita. He flys the through the sky over the jungle to bring her to Lanka.
- This is interesting because it seems as if Ravana never intended on Maricha surviving
- In the sky, she saw a vulture and prayed for his help. The vulture injured Ravana, but Ravana eventually slayed the vulture Jatayu
- This is the first clue to help Lakshmana and Rama to find Sita
- In Lanka, Ravana tried to seduce Sita, but failed to because Sita was never swayed from Rama.
- This seems like a theme in the story of always staying faithful
- Rama was distraught by the disappearance of Sita, but found Jatayu dying and Jatayu told them where she was before he died
- This is the beginning of their journey
- On their way, Lakshmana and Rama fought a demon, but off his arms, and sent him to heaven.
- This is a good scene set up for the rest of the story
- Characters
- Maricha is the most interesting character in this part despite his short participation in the story
- He knew that Ravana should not try to battle Rama, but he was forced to go because Ravana was so set on destroying Rama
