Reading Notes:

  • The Bull That Demanded Fair Treatment
    • There was a bull who was treated very well and grew up to be able to pull the most amount of weight of any bull in India
    • The Brahmin then bet a rich farmer that his bull could pull 100 carts 
    • The farmer agreed and the brahmin pressured the bull to pull, and the bull did not like this so the bull did not pull
    • The Brahmin went home disappointed, but when the bull told him what was wrong, the Brahmin went back with a bet double the original and treated the bull well and so the bull pulled all of the carts
  • The Bull That Proved His Gratitude 
    • There was a bull that was treated very well by his owner, but eventually, the owner grew old. 
    • The bull wanted to pay the owner back so he pulled 500 wagons and was paid 1000 coins after convincing the people he worked for 
    • He brought the money back to his owner and she praised him until she passed away
  • The Horse That Held Out To the End 
    • There was a horse that was praised by all and was fed the best food in a great kingdom 
    • One day, seven of the other kings came together to fight the great kingdom and a knight had bring the horse into battle
    • The Knight and Horse beat all seven kingdoms, but the horse died
  • The Monkey That Saved The Herd
    • There was a monkey responsible for a herd of 80,000 monkeys.
    • The monkeys went to a lake haunted by an ogre and the king decided to make straws out of canes so that the ogre could not gain power over them 
    • The plan succeeded and the monkeys went back into the forest
  • The Mallard That Asked For Too Much
    • There was a father that died and came back to life as a golden mallard 
    • He provided for his family by giving them golden feathers until his wife decided to pluck all of his feathers at once
    • The feathers turned white and the mallard never came back
  • The Merchant Who Overcame All Obstacles 
    • There was a merchant passing over a desert and was the land pilot
    • The desert was 60 leagues across and on the last night the land pilot threw out everything
    • The merchants then got turned around and ended up at the same encampment as before
    • Before losing hope a well was dug and water was found and the men made it to the city safe 
  • The Elephant That Was Honored in Old Age
    • There was an elephant who worked hard for the King until the elephant got too old and then retired to the forest 
    • The King needed carts to be Yolked and called upon the elephant said no because of the work he had put in previously 
    • The King now understood and began honoring the elephant again
  • The Faithful Friend
    • There was an elephant and a dog who were close friends
    • The elephant and dog were best friends until a peasant paid to take the dog away
    • The elephant grew sad and refused to eat or drink
    • The king took notice and asked why and the elephant said because of the dog 
    • The king then understood and ordered the dog to be returned to the elephant and the elephant and dog were reunited
